Highland Airways started operations in 1991 as Air Alba before being renamed to Highland Airways in 1997.
In 1998 Highland Airways won the contract to carry the daily newspapers and so were a regular sight at Sumburgh.
On the 22nd October 2004 G-TWIG crashed 37 miles north-west of Inverness having completed the newspaper deliveries for the day, sadly killing the pilot Tim Cook.
From 2004 to 2009 they also held the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency contract to operate two Cessna F406s on surveillance duties.
On the 24th March 2010, Highland Airways was placed in to voluntary administration.
The flight deck of G-UIST was used in the filming of ‘Batman: The Dark Knight Rises (2012)’ and now belongs to former Highland Airways pilot Paul Gibbs.
